Greg Reisdorf, the former multiplayer creative director at Sledgehammer Games who was involved in multiple Call of Duty titles, recently sat down with EsportsBets for an exclusive interview discussing various topics related to the gaming industry. According to a former COD developer, the current $80 standard may not be the final stop. He believes $100 games are not only possible but inevitable.
On that note, here's everything you need to know about the interview.
"A $100 game is going to happen eventually": Former Call of Duty developer speaks on the future of gaming
The interview opened with Greg Reisdorf reflecting on his long career in the games industry and his time helping shape the Call of Duty franchise. The conversation then shifted toward rising development costs and pricing in modern gaming.
When asked about his opinion on the $100 price tag for AAA titles, Reisdorf warned that higher prices are inevitable:
"A $100 game is going to happen eventually. You just don’t want to be the first person to do it. All the publishers are waiting. The Outer Worlds got tagged with the $80 price tag and they didn’t even know it."He suggested that Grand Theft Auto VI might realistically break the $100 barrier. Reisdorf believes that Rockstar Games could charge that price without significant backlash, as long as the quality matches expectations. According to him, Call of Duty will not be the first to make this move.
He also explained that investor pressure plays a big role. Once one publisher proves that a $100 price point works, others will face questions about why they are not doing the same. From that point, higher prices could spread quickly across the AAA space.
The $80 already being normalized in the AAA gaming industry despite being highly controversial. Whether the industry eventually moves toward $100 games remains to be seen.
That's everything you need to know about Greg Reisdorf's opinion on upcoming game prices.
