(Bloomberg) — Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is considering firing Armed Forces commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Financial Times reported, following days of turmoil engulfing the country’s military leadership.

The fast-moving developments come in response to backlash after Zelenskyy fired civilian defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who was at odds with Syrskyi over strategy but popular across the war-torn country.

The removal of Fedorov, one of the architects of Kyiv’s successful drone campaign against Russia, triggered street protests as well as dismay among Ukraine’s foreign allies.

The tensions have erupted at a pivotal moment in Russia’s invasion, now well into its fifth year, as momentum has arguably swung in Ukraine’s favor as Kyiv’s forces continue to strike energy infrastructure and other targets deep within Russia.

Thousands of people rallied in central Kyiv on Thursday in response to calls on social media to oppose Federov’s removal. Protests continued for a second day on Friday outside of presidential office.

Federov told reporters that Zelenskyy had refused his request to dismiss Moscow-educated Syrskyi, 60, a four-star general whom he accused of obstructing defense reforms as well as orchestrating his removal.
