Met Gala 2026 Theme Revealed
For a poignant illustration of what a difference 20 years can make—or why time is but a societal construct—may we direct your attention to the celebrities filing into the 2006 Met Gala ahead of the May 4 event.
From Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony to Tom Brady and girlfriend Bridget Moynahan (yes, his future ex-wife Gisele Bündchen was also there, posing solo), the former couples alone are wild blasts from the past.
Also hitting the steps outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art were a who's who of mid-2000s It girls and fashion royalty, including Jessica Alba, Liv Tyler, Lindsay Lohan, Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendes, Mary Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen, Zoe Saldaña, Selma Blair, Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham.
They were all dressed to the nines, but leave it to Sarah Jessica Parker to be the walking illustration of the night's theme. In honor of "AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion, she delivered an instantly iconic moment twinning in red tartan plaid with Alexander McQueen.
"It wasn't a fun night. It was, but it wasn't," Parker told Vogue in 2022 of attending with the British designer, who died in 2010. "Because I was so nervous. I just wanted him to be OK. He knew how I felt about him, and there was so much affection and such a deep admiration and everybody loved him because he was such a touching person."

Moreover, the Sex and the City alum kept "every pin he dropped from his mouth." Parker noted, "I have things that seem like nothing, from every fitting I did with him in my possession."
Not every first Monday in May is so laden with meaning, but it's still a place people come to for magic—including Nicole Kidman, who's co-chairing for the third time this year, along with Beyoncé, Venus Williams and perennial chair Anna Wintour.
But there was something about that time when the mystique was real.
"Before I started going in 2009, it was before social media and before everyone had access to everything at all times," Karlie Kloss told Vogue in 2024. "So there was something so mysterious about it. I didn’t know what actually happened at the Met Gala, but I just knew that whoever walked that red carpet was transported to another universe."
Now the party has its own Instagram booth and Kylie Jenner broke the no-selfie rule in 2017, bringing the world into the Met bathroom with her famous pals.
But before the luminaries of movies, music, art and sports start emerging from The Mark, The Pierre, The Carlyle and more on May 4—this year's theme is "Costume Art," featuring the dress code "Fashion Is Art"—we're rewinding the clock 20 years to recapture the "AngloMania" magic of fashion's biggest night:
Alexander McQueen & Sarah Jessica Parker
The Sex and the City star embodied the 2006 Met Gala theme, "AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion," in a McQueen creation.
Drew Barrymore, Stuart Townsend & Charlize Theron

The goth metal rocker and the burlesque queen had just married in 2005 and would divorce in 2007, but here they mingled with the beautiful people.
Emmy Rossum

We wouldn't call him a basket case, but the Green Day singer apparently did not have the time to get dressed up for the Met Gala.
André Leon Talley & Naomi Campbell
The late Vogue editor-at-large and his supermodel date, wearing Givenchy by Alexander McQueen, were the opposite of dreckitude.
Kate Moss

Lindsay Lohan
Just the photographer's luck, catching a radiant Lindsay Lohan coming down the steps in Marchesa.

Kim Basinger
