Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham issued an earnest request to fans after dildos were thrown onto WNBA courts in two separate games over the last three days.
The first incident took place during a game between the Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries on Tuesday, causing a brief stoppage late in the fourth quarter. A similar incident occurred in the third quarter of Friday's matchup between the Chicago Sky and the Valkyries. A referee intervened and kicked the object away from the court after it landed near the Sky basket.
Cunningham called out those responsible, fearing for the safety of the players.
"stop throwing dildos on the court… you’re going to hurt one of us."Both were thrown during active play and could have caused an injury had a player accidentally stepped on them.
Meanwhile, Sophie Cunningham's Fever teammate Sydney Colson jokingly took responsibility for Tuesday's mishap.
"Sorry I did NOT mean to throw that so far y’all," Colson posted on X.On Friday, she dropped an emoji, which many fans believed was concerning the situation.
Fans drop mixed reactions to Sophie Cunningham's protest against dildos being thrown on the court
Sophie Cunningham raised a valid concern on Friday about fans throwing objects on the court. While many backed her stance, others mocked her and the WNBA.
A few critics of the women's league were of the belief that incidents like these help boost ratings. Meanwhile, others were simply surprised that Cunningham had to address such an event.
Here are the reactions to Cunningham's tweet:
No way this is a real tweet 😂
You’re upset about the most public attention you all have ever gotten? Maybe make the game interesting and people would do this.
How does the WNBA let the same mistake happen twice? It’s honestly embarrassing
It’s literally the only thing helping wbna’s ratings…. Be grateful
The new fans are out of control. Thank you, Sophie.
The players will hope the incident doesn't happen again. As Sophie Cunningham mentioned, an unfortunate injury could occur.
