The 2026 season has been a whirlwind one for veteran broadcaster Jim Nantz.
The CBS man saw his longtime battery with Tony Romo be severed following an OWI arrest in Wisconsin over the summer. Romo and CBS mutually agreed to part ways earlier in the month.
Now bumping shoulders with three-time Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt, Nantz appears to have found his rhythm. Still, complications do happen, as was the case when the pairing took to the booth on Sunday afternoon.
Here's what you need to know.

Nantz appeared to be cut down by an unlikely injury during Sunday's broadcast of Bills vs. Raiders. CBS's veteran play-by-play man attempted a demonstration of the "Peanut Punch" — a move popularized by former Bears cornerback-turned-federal agent Charles Tillman. His attempt backfired in a major way.
Watt flaunted a new technique to avoid the indignity of losing the ball via "Peanut Punch." The formula revolves around a player gripping the wrist of his ball-carrying hand for added protection. Watt called on Nantz to try to dislodge the orb from his grasp via "Peanut Punch."
Nantz responded in the only way he knew how, firing off a counter right hand that would leave prizefighters impressed. He instantly regretted his decision.
JIM NANTZ JUST TRIED TO PEANUT PUNCH @JJWatt 🤣 "I did not think you were gonna go that hard" "my wrist is broken" 😭 https://t.co/ocdRBn282r
— NFL on CBS 🏈 (@NFLonCBS) October 18, 2026"I did not think you were gonna go that hard,” Watt said as Nantz returned to his seat, hand clasped over his right writst.
Nantz appeared to be lost in a trance, unsure what to make of his newfound shiner. The 67-year-old joked that he broke his wrist in that moment, although he and Watt's banter during the incident hopefully suggest that isn't the case.
"Physical at times in that first half. Gonna be a few folks having to play hurt the last couple of quarters..." - Jim Nantz holding an ice pack 😅 https://t.co/oY2FpDm6y0
— NFL on CBS 🏈 (@NFLonCBS) October 18, 2026Either way, here's hoping Nantz keeps his pugilist ways to a minimum in the future. He was seen tending to his ailment with an ice pack after a commercial break, so perhaps that's enough to keep him in the booth — and out of the ring — going forward.
