SEATTLE — The Yankees’ fears were confirmed on Tuesday when Oswaldo Cabrera was diagnosed with a fractured left ankle.

The effervescent third baseman was injured in a gruesome play at the plate in the ninth inning Monday night at T-Mobile Park, which forced him to leave the field in an ambulance headed to a local hospital.

It was not immediately clear if there was any further damage to Cabrera’s ligaments around his ankle or if it was just a clean break, which may be the best-case scenario in an otherwise brutal development.

The Yankees placed Cabrera on the 10-day injured list and activated DJ LeMahieu off of it after the veteran infielder missed the first month and a half of the season with a calf strain.

LeMahieu was expected to see the majority of his playing time at second base while Jazz Chisholm Jr. is out with a strained oblique, though the Yankees may need him at third base too, with Oswald Peraza and Paul Reyes also candidates to fill in there.
