Yankees urged to replace struggling catcher before MLB trade deadline

As the MLB trade deadline rapidly approaches, teams like the New York Yankees figure to be in the thick of all trade discussions.

A recent report by Yankees' insider Joel Sherman indicates that the Yankees are looking to improve in two areas this summer: backup catcher and bullpen support.

This report, along with many others that suggest New York needs to find a platoon option for Austin Wells, spells bad news for JC Escarra, who has seen a solid amount of opportunities at the plate with Wells injured.

Yankees urged to replace JC Escarra before MLB trade deadline

It seems very obvious that either JC Escarra or Ali Sanchez will be off the Yankees roster once Austin Wells returns, but the idea of them being replaced means Escarra (or Sanchez) will likely have to find jobs elsewhere.

In a recent piece for FanSided.com, MLB writer Zachary Rotman names one player from every MLB team that should be replaced before the MLB trade deadline, and for the Yanks, it's Escarra:

"J.C. Escarra has had a couple of good offensive games since Austin Wells was placed on the IL, but Wells shouldn't be out for too long, and once he does, he'll almost certainly be the starter again. As the New York Yankees have seen this season, a duo of Wells and Escarra does not work, since neither left-handed-hitting catcher can hit left-handed pitching."

The New York Yankees have strongly been rumored to trading for Twins' catcher Ryan Jeffers, and there are other speculative rumors regarding the Yankees and who they could target this summer as a backup catcher.

Escarra is hitting .095 this season with 0 HR's and 7 RBI across 77 at-bats.
