The New York Yankees' biggest problem continues to be in the bullpen, but it's almost tough to ignore the fact that Ryan McMahon has been one of the worst hitters in Major League Baseball this season.
If the Yankees are as serious as they appear to be this year, there's just no way they can put a guy out there who's hitting .194 on the year with four home runs.
McMahon had a great game against the Toronto Blue Jays and deserves some credit for that after his performance on Tuesday night, hitting a home run and collecting three RBIs, as well as another hit and a stolen base, but we have a near-decade-long sample size showing he's been a very average-to-below-average hitter.
As a result, something the Yankees are going to go after is Isaac Paredes, who, in his own right, also hasn't been too good this year.
“Another team where the need doesn't necessarily match the market. The Yankees need a righty-hitting catcher, but Ryan Jeffers just hit the injured list, while the Colorado Rockies aren't giving up Hunter Goodman this early in his career. But if the Houston Astros can stomach trading with an arch-rival, they've got an ideal bat to spell Ryan McMahon at third base,” Jackson Roberts wrote.
Historically, Paredes is a much better offensive player than McMahon, though the current Yankees third baseman is the much better defender.
The Houston Astros third baseman is expected to be traded at the deadline, but he's hitting just .244 on the year with five home runs. Paredes has a league-average 101 OPS+ and an OPS of just .711, which would be the worst of his career in a full season.
