The New York Yankees have some serious depth issues within the starting rotation.
Before the season even started, they lost ace and former Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole to a torn UCL. They're also without last year's breakout star Luis Gil, who is dealing with a right lat strain.
This has led to a reliance on veteran arms like Marcus Stroman and Carlos Carrasco, and it hasn't gone well for the Yankees.
In regard to the former, Stroman has struggled immensely through the first month of the season. In three starts, Stroman has a bloated 11.57 ERA, allowing 12 hits, 12 earned runs and seven walks in just 9.1 innings pitched.
Then, he was placed on the 15-day injured list with left knee inflammation on April 12.
It's clear why Stroman, who is making $18.3 million this season, was the subject of trade talks all offseason.
Thus, FanSided's Zach Pressnell urged New York to simply cut ties with the two-time All-Star regardless of the financial implications.
"The Yankees' pitching depth is quite shallow this season, so some may argue that Stroman can provide them depth, but it's not the depth they want. In fact, Stroman has been the worst pitcher on the team and it's not particularly close. The Yankees would be better off elevating a prospect like Brock Selvidge to take his place," Pressnell wrote.
The Yankees need as much depth as possible in the starting rotation given the injuries that have been mounting, but Stroman has failed to offer them anything positive of note to begin the season.
Even though it's unlikely now that Stroman will reach the 140-inning contract trigger, his performance alone is enough for New York to part ways.
