Yankees trade proposal lands Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suárez in 3-player swap

The fit between the New York Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks on an Eugenio Suárez trade is obvious, but it all comes down to the potential return.

Suárez is the best-hitting third baseman in the sport so far this season, with 31 home runs, an .889 OPS, and 78 RBI, the most in the National League. And the Yankees' third basemen have combined for an OPS of .653, ranking 22nd in the league.

Though Suárez is an impending free agent, it's clearly going to take a sizable offer to land him. The Diamondbacks should be willing to listen on offers even if they're not fully out of the playoff race, but they could still hang onto him if they don't get what they're seeking.

Would an offer proposed on Tuesday by Fantasy Sports on SI's Mark Morales-Smith get the job done?

Morales-Smith hypothesized that the Yankees could send rookie right-handed pitcher Cam Schlittler and left-handed pitching prospect Kyle Carr to the Diamondbacks for the two-time All-Star Suárez.

"The Diamondbacks need pitching for the future that they can build around. They have the young sluggers for their lineup, but pitching has proven to be an issue," Morales-Smith wrote.

"This trade allows them to move a 34-year-old slugger for young pitchers who can develop into key pieces for them as they look to compete for championships moving forward. Schlitter will be ready to roll next season, while Carr may be a bit more of an investment."

Schlittler, 24, had an impressive 99 strikeouts in 76 2/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A this season before debuting in the majors against the Seattle Mariners last week. He's a tall, whippy righty with an electric arm who could be the prized prospect in any trade.

No one knows what sorts of conversations are happening in the Diamondbacks' front office, but it wouldn't be a surprise if they were inclined to accept a Suárez deal with Schlittler as the headliner. It also wouldn't be a surprise if the Yankees don't want to lose him now that he's arrived in the show.
