Yankees trade idea for Tarik Skubal involving two top prospects gets unfortunate outlook

While the New York Yankees' starting rotation might be one of the best in baseball this season, they could still use a top pitcher if one is made available.

So, with Tarik Skubal potentially on the move this summer with the Detroit Tigers struggling, the Yankees are a natural landing spot. The only question is what the Yankees would be willing to give up in a trade.

ESPN's Eric Karabell and Kiley McDaniel shared a trade idea the Yankees could present for Skubal, involving two top prospects, but with an unfortunate response from a mock general manager.

Yankees get unfortunate outlook amid Tarik Skubal trade idea

"The offer: OF Spencer Jones and RHP Carlos Lagrange or RHP Elmer Rodriguez," Karabell writes. "... That is a lot, but then again, so is Skubal."

Sending Jones to the Tigers, especially after the Aaron Judge injury, on top of adding one of Lagrange or Rodriguez, would make for a big offer. But, for Skubal, it's worth it.

However, this package didn't receive a welcome response from the mock GM in this scenario for ESPN.

"Unfortunately, even including all three of these prospects wouldn't get it done because I got better offers than I was expecting from other teams," McDaniel writes.

The initial offer only included one pitcher and Jones, but McDaniel doesn't even believe both pitchers and Jones would be enough to pull the trigger on a deal, acting as the Tigers' GM.

Instead, McDaniel notes that "For reference, all three of these players plus Dax Kilby," would be what the Yankees would have to offer to be serious contenders for Skubal.

Even though having Skubal, the back-to-back Cy Young winner, would be very fun for the Yankees' rotation, such a scenario is not likely at all.

Cam Schlittler, Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, and the rest of the Yankees starting options will have to be good enough, as the Yankees offer for Skubal in this trade idea, which is likely around what the Yankees would be willing to give up, isn't close to enough.
