Yankees reportedly attempting to sign $12M former MVP, 7-time All-Star, 4-time Gold Glove winner

The MLB offseason has been a wild one, filled with twists and turns. While most deals have already been completed, several notable players remain unsigned. One of the most recent moves came when the Arizona Diamondbacks signed Carlos Santana.

“The Arizona Diamondbacks have made their long-anticipated move at the first base position by signing a former All-Star! No, not that former All-Star… 16-year veteran Carlos Santana has agreed to a one-year, $2 million deal with the D-backs in what will effectively close the door on every Snakes fans’ dream: Paul Goldschmidt,” PHNX’s Derek Montilla wrote.

While Goldschmidt likely won’t be returning to Arizona, the New York Yankees appear increasingly interested in a reunion as the offseason continues.

“Heyman also mentions that first baseman Paul Goldschmidt seems willing to return to the Yankees even if that’s in a part-time role. Jack Curry of Yes Network mentioned the club’s interest in a Goldschmidt reunion on Yankees Hot Stove earlier this week. Goldschmidt signed a one-year, $12.5MM deal to join the Yankees a year ago and was set to be their everyday first baseman. He should have less earning power now and would likely be looking at a lesser role as well,” MLB Trade Rumors’ Darragh McDonald wrote.

So far, the Yankees’ only major move this offseason has been bringing Cody Bellinger back to the Bronx.

“The New York Yankees and outfielder Cody Bellinger are in agreement on a five-year, $162.5 million contract, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan on Wednesday, ending a standoff between two sides that preferred to reunite all winter long. The deal includes opt-outs after the second and third seasons, a $20 million signing bonus and a full no-trade clause, sources said,” ESPN’s Jorge Castillo wrote.

The Yankees know they need a reliable platoon option, and Goldschmidt could fill that role. New York is expected to compete for the top spot in the AL East, and having a veteran like Goldschmidt on the roster would be valuable.

Goldschmidt has seen nearly everything the game of baseball has to offer. A return to the Yankees could pay major dividends for both sides.
