One of the biggest downfalls for the New York Yankees this season came from their bullpen. They went from having one of the most consistent bullpens over the last three years to finishing the regular season with a 4,37 ERA, which ranks them 23rd across MLB.
Veterans who were counted on battled inconsistencies this season. Players whom they signed to be high-leverage arms, like Devin Williams, also did not show up as the front office thought they would.
Luckily for the Bronx Bombers, some of these arms will be free agents when the season comes to an end. This list includes Luke Weaver, Devin Williams, Paul Blackburn, and Ryan Yarbrough. They also have club options on Jonathan Loaisiga and Tim Hill.
Yankees reliever predicted to sign with the rival Red Sox this winter
While the Yankees and Boston Red Sox are bitter rivals, many players have bounced from both teams, with one of the latest examples being Aroldis Chapman. Chapman played for the Bronx Bombers in 2016 and again from 2018-2022, and signed a one-year deal with Boston ahead of this season.
More Yankees players could be on the move to Boston with this latest prediction. Masslive's Chris Cotillo predicts that Luke Weaver will sign a contract with the Red Sox.
"The prediction here is that the Red Sox sign two arms – a righty and a lefty – but don't break the bank for either. There are many trustworthy options internally (including some projected starters) who can be counted on, too. Wild guess? (Justin) Wilson or Luke Weaver."
Weaver is coming off a season where he appeared in 64 games, holding down a 3.62 ERA across 64.2 innings of work. That could translate well into a Boston bullpen that finished the regular season with a 3.41 ERA, the second best across MLB.
