Yankees recall Anthony Volpe with Jose Caballero likely headed to IL

BALTIMORE – Anthony Volpe is back in the big leagues.

The Yankees called up the shortstop on Tuesday with José Caballero likely headed to the injured list ahead of their game against the Orioles at Camden Yards, a source confirmed to The Post.

Volpe had been optioned to Triple-A last week after his rehab assignment expired, with Caballero delivering strong play on both sides of the ball to change the Yankees’ original plan to reinsert Volpe as their starting shortstop.

He was coming off of October surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, but by the time he was ready to come back, he had lost his job to Caballero.

That changed when Caballero dove back into first base during the ninth inning of Sunday’s game against the Brewers, injuring his right middle finger.

He pinch-ran in the ninth inning on Monday but then drove back to New York to undergo an MRI and see a hand specialist and team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad on Tuesday morning.
