Yankees quietly trade ex-Red Sox, Mets shortstop to Nationals amid Opening Day moves

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and the AL East club's front office have been very busy the last few days, putting the final touches on the Opening Day roster.

A few of the Yankees' moves on Tuesday flew under the radar. First, the Atlanta Braves claimed right-hander Osvaldo Bido off waivers after he posted a 1.29 ERA in seven innings during spring training with New York.

Reports indicate that Rule 5 Draft selection Cade Winquest has made the Yankees' Opening Day roster. The 25-year-old has never appeared above Double-A but looks to cement himself as a key contributor in middle relief.

Finally, the Yankees made a trade with the Washington Nationals, sending shortstop Zack Short to a rebuilding club.

Yankees agree to trade with Nationals

New York dealt Short to the Nationals on Tuesday in exchange for cash considerations, per announcements from both clubs.

Short, 30, with 241 Major League games under his belt, was a long shot to crack the Opening Day roster after signing a minor league deal. He's spent time with five different organizations, most notably the Detroit Tigers, New York Mets, and Boston Red Sox

Short is a light-hitting middle infielder with a career .567 OPS in 594 trips to the plate. The Nationals could use him on the bench or send him to Triple-A to open the season.
