Yankees putting Jazz Chisholm on IL in latest injury blow

Just as the Yankees lineup got close to whole for a day, it took another hit.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. is going on the 10-day injured list with a right thumb sprain after jamming it diving into second base on Tuesday night.

The second baseman will be shut down from baseball activities for at least 7-10 days, Aaron Boone said Wednesday, which jeopardizes his ability to play again in the regular season with less than three weeks remaining.

It is brutal timing for Chisholm and the Yankees, a day after Aaron Judge made his long-awaited return from the IL. Chisholm is in the final month of what has been a largely disappointing season, but the second baseman had finally strung together a few good weeks, batting .295 with a .832 OPS and 10 steals over his last 29 games.

When Boone spoke to reporters, the team had just received the news on Chisholm, so he said had not yet spoken to Brian Cashman about who would replace Chisholm on the roster. Jose Caballero was starting at second base Wednesday night against the Rockies.

But Boone did say he would be comfortable playing Anthony Volpe at second base in the majors, a month after the shortstop began adding the position to his repertoire when he was demoted to Triple-A last month and replaced by top prospect George Lombard Jr.

While expanding his defensive versatility, Volpe has been on fire of late at the plate. Over his last 17 games at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he was batting .333 with eight home runs and a 1.218 OPS. That included a stretch of five home runs in five games, leading fellow former top prospect Jasson Dominguez (who rejoined the Yankees on Saturday) to joke that Volpe had become Barry Bonds.
