Yankees predicted to lose Eugenio Suárez sweepstakes to Brewers

The New York Yankees are in need of a third baseman, but they are not the only team with a need in the hot corner. Eugenio Suárez is the best third baseman available, but the Yankees may not win the sweepstakes for him.

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, Suárez is being made available by the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Yankees would love to add his bat to their lineup and fill their void at third base. However, CBS Sports' Mike Axisa predicted the Milwaukee Brewers would land Suárez at the deadline.

"Rookie Caleb Durbin has come on strong the last few weeks, so the Brewers don't absolutely need a third baseman, but why not upgrade when a division title is within reach and you haven't won a postseason series since 2018? Trading for a third baseman when you don't need a third baseman qualifies as bold, I suppose," wrote Axisa.

"I'll say Suárez goes to the Brewers and the main piece in the return is righty Tobias Myers, who has been squeezed out of Milwaukee's deep rotation," Axisa continued. "An overpay? Yeah, probably, but whoever gets Suárez will have to win a bidding war."

Part of the reason the Brewers are not rushing to add a third baseman is because of the Yankees. Durbin was one of the players who went over in the Devin Williams trade, and he has been great as of late. He is slashing .326/.422/.413 in the last 30 games. The Brewers could use an upgrade at shortstop, and may consider moving Durbin to second base to play Brice Turang at shortstop, the position he played coming up in the organization.

That would leave a hole at third base, and Suárez is a rental bat who could be a great fit for the Brewers financially. Meanwhile, the Yankees would have to pivot to a different option. Ryan McMahon and Ke'Bryan Hayes could be names to monitor if the Yankees can't land Suárez.
