The New York Yankees had to feel they were all set at catcher.
Austin Wells has been good, so heading into this season with Wells, and J.C. Escarra, and even a potential Ben Rice cameo, seemed like it was plenty.
That was before Wells took a gigantic step backward.
He entered Sunday's action hitting just .169 on the season with a .573 OPS.
His previous career-worst OPS was .712, so a drop of about 125 points is absolutely brutal.
The Yanks could turn to Escarra, who is a great fielder but has an inconsistent bat.
They could mess with Rice's red-hot rhythm by seeing if he could catch more.
Or they could maybe hit the trade market, with Yankees fans taking to social media to suggest some bold maneuvers:
Why don’t the Yankees go get Adley???
He’s only making $7,250,000 and is a top name for trade candidates, he would be a gigantic boost to a struggling catcher core
He’s got an elite arm and is considered to be a top 3 framer in the league… we definitely can do this#RepBX pic.twitter.com/mwXBzSQOGe

A trade might be easier said than done, but it's certainly something that's going to be rumored for the Yanks if Wells doesn't pick up his play.
New York doesn't need Wells to be a superstar, but right now, he's on the verge of unplayable.
If this doesn't get better soon, it'll be a huge trouble for the Yanks going forward.
They're going to have to figure this out, one way or another.
