Yankees' make surgery decision on Oswaldo Cabrera after gruesome injury

The New York Yankees saw utilityman Oswaldo Cabrera leave the field in an ambulance after breaking his ankle tagging up on a shallow fly ball. The team has made a decision on how they will approach his rehab.

The first big question is whether or not Cabrera will need surgery. Boon noted that surgery was "in play" as early as Thursday, according to the New York Post's Greg Joyce. According to Joyce, the Yankees have decided that Cabrera will get multiple opinions before surgery, as opposed to opting for surgery out of the gate.

"Oswaldo Cabrera saw a doctor back in NY this morning and is going for an MRI, but is scheduled to see a few more to get multiple opinions on his ankle before any potential surgery," Joyce revealed on X.

The Yankees have clearly decided to cover all of their bases before putting Cabrera under the knife. However, if Cabrera does need surgery, his return is dependent on what exactly doctors see in his ankle.

"If and when Cabrera does undergo the knife, what it looks like in there around his ankle — i.e. if there is any ligament damage or how complicated the fracture is — will determine whether or not he has any chance of playing again this season," wrote Joyce.

Cabrera had been playing third base for the Yankees. DJ LeMahieu started the year hurt, so instead of a platoon, Cabrera was given the keys to the hot corner. He has thrived as a utilityman for the Yankees, but has been stepping up at third base. Now, with Cabrera out and LeMahieu filling in for Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second base, the Yankees are in serious need of a third baseman.

While the Yankees have not yet decided if Cabrera will have surgery, they have seemingly decided that it will be a very well-informed decision. Boone spoke on putting together a return timeline for Cabrera as well.

"I think everything’s on the table until we get all the opinions," Boone said Wednesday morning, per Joyce. "And then if we do surgery, what exactly is in there? And then you have a better idea of the timeline."
