Yankees linked to $70 million Rockies All-Star for lineup upgrade

The New York Yankees have overcome various injury issues that plagued them early in the 2025 season. They are 48-36 and lead the American League East by 1 1/2 games over the Tampa Bay Rays.

If the postseason began today, New York would be the third seed in the Junior Circuit.

They'll have needs to address at the trade deadline, which is now 30 days away. An infield bat is likely going to be at the top of their list.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com linked New York to Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon.

"New York’s third basemen rank near the bottom of the league in most offensive categories, and that’s with Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s solid numbers during his time at the hot corner," Feinsand wrote.

"Adding a third baseman such as Colorado’s Ryan McMahon, Arizona’s Eugenio Suárez or Yoán Moncada of the Angels would bolster the Yankees’ already impressive lineup."

The Yankees have a clear need at third base. McMahon is a former All-Star and could fill that need.

The veteran third baseman has struggled this season, slashing .220/.322/.394 with 12 home runs, 25 RBI and a .716 OPS. He also has a 1.4 WAR mark this year.

He was an All-Star in 2024, a year in which he hit 20 home runs and drove in 65 runs. As a left-handed hitter, he could benefit from the short right field porch at Yankee Stadium.

McMahon also has two years of team control after 2025, so he would be a significant upgrade at third base for the Bronx Bombers, and one that could stay for several years.

If he can replicate his numbers in Colorado, he'll cost a significant price, but New York should have enough to keep him around if they do decide to trade for him.

It will be interesting to see who the Yankees land on in their pursuit of a third baseman.
