Yankees linked to $5.9M infielder for 'marginal upgrade' on the infield

The New York Yankees have a clear need at third base and are likely to add an infielder before the 2025 Major League Baseball trade deadline on July 31.

The Yankees have had a need at third base all offseason, but New York opted not to address it. Ahead of the trade deadline, New York has been linked to several infielders, but MLB.com's Mark Feinsand links the Yankees to infielder Luis Regnfio of the Los Angeles Angels if New York is looking for a marginal upgrade.

“Third base has been an issue for the Yankees all season, especially since Oswaldo Cabrera suffered a season-ending injury in mid-May,” Feinsand wrote. “New York’s third basemen rank near the bottom of the league in most offensive categories, and that’s with Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s solid numbers during his time at the hot corner.

“Adding a third baseman such as Colorado’s Ryan McMahon, Arizona’s Eugenio Suárez or Yoán Moncada of the Angels would bolster the Yankees’ already impressive lineup. New York could also look for a marginal upgrade in the infield with somebody such as Andujar or Luis Rengifo,” Feinsand added.

Rengifo is earning $5.95 million and is a pending free agent, so it likely wouldn’t cost much to acquire him from the Angels. He could play at second base or third base for the Yankees and can also play a corner outfield if needed.

Rengifo would likely be a bench bat and add some depth to the infield. The 28-year-old switch-hitter is hitting .229 with 4 home runs and 19 RBIs. He's appeared in 602 career games, all with the Angels.
