Yankees have a major strikeout flaw that could sink their 2026 playoff chances

The New York Yankees recently got Aaron Judge back from the injured list. But Trent Grisham and Jazz Chisholm Jr. are both on the IL now.

While there are some current injury concerns for the Yankees, come the MLB postseason, this Yankees team should be more than capable of a deep run. That is, if one major issue doesn't drag them down.

ESPN's David Schoenfield highlighted the Yankees' major strikeout problems on offense as a potential "fatal flaw" in October. If the Yankees' hitters continue to strike out at a high rate, they could be looking at an early playoff exit.

"New York Yankees. Fatal flaw: Offensive strikeout rate (27th in the majors)," Schoenfield writes. "... Going back to 2022 and the universal DH, no team in the bottom half of strikeout rate has reached the World Series."

This Yankees team has struck out 1,394 times this season, good for the sixth-most in Major League Baseball. The only other playoff team in the same stratosphere is the Chicago White Sox at 1,413 strikeouts.

These lofty strikeout numbers are thanks to Chisholm at 153, Ben Rice at 152, Jose Cabellero at 104, Ryan McMahon at 101, Austin Wells at 99, and Spencer Jones at 94 strikeouts.

Grisham (89), Paul Goldschmidt (85), Judge (85), and Cody Bellinger (83) have added their fair share of strikeouts to the Yankees' lofty total.

While they're not the worst team in strikeouts this year, their high strikeout rate (27th) and the team's sixth-most strikeouts in MLB are reasons to worry about this team.

History suggests they aren't going to make the World Series, and this high strikeout total is the kind of figure that could easily be the reason why they fail in October.

There is a chance the Yankees fix this issue, to a certain degree, and make a deep postseason run. But the odds aren't in their favor, as the team's high strikeout rate has a chance to be a "fatal flaw" this postseason.
