Yankees get massive update on potential $70 million trade target

The New York Yankees have a hole at third base after moving Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to second base. A potential target is reportedly likely to be moved.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Noah Hiles, Ke'Bryan Hayes' chances of being traded are "better than 50/50," per a post from 93.7 The Fan's Andrew Fillipponi on X.

The Pirates signed him to an eight-year, $70 million deal in 2022. He is not an elite offensive player, but he could single-handedly change the Yankees' infield defense. He is a Gold Glover and could be an everyday third baseman for the Yankees. He is slashing .238/.284 /.293 on the season.

Hayes' father, Charlie Hayes, won a World Series with the Yankees, and reportedly told ESPN's Michael Kay that he is not happy with how the Pirates have gone about developing his son's bat. Perhaps Hayes could see an offensive turnaround if he were traded to the Yankees.

Last season, Jazz Chisholm Jr. saw his offense improve after a trade to the Yankees. Hayes could experience something similar, and his offense has already been moving in the right direction.

Since June 8, he has been hitting .274. He was hitting .221 on June 7. Even if he is not as good an option as Eugenio Suárez at the trade deadline, he could make the Yankees a better team defensively. He would also be a long-term option at third base while the Yankees take a crack at developing his bat.
