The New York Yankees have to be hopeful that prices at the trade deadline aren't nearly as high as some think they could be when it comes to trading for Tarik Skubal. Skubal, who figures to be the best player traded at this deadline if everything goes as planned, is going to sign a massive deal in the offseason.
Outside of teams like the Yankees, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and a handful of others, the chances of signing him are slim for most teams. That's something many teams around the league will have to deal with, which makes his trade situation much more interesting than most others.
But for the Yankees, a team that has to go all in right now, it's not crazy to say that trading for Skubal could cost them a lot less than some are thinking.
If history is on the Yankees' side, one could even go as far as to say that, historically, rental starting pitchers really don't go for much.
“Trades involving a pitcher like Skubal, a Cy Young winner who will be a free agent after the season, are rare, but they're not unprecedented. It's instructive to look back at similar trades to get an idea of what the Tigers could expect to get back in a Skubal trade. And you know what? It's not great. Rental aces haven't fetched enormous returns at the trade deadline, historically,” Mike Axisa wrote.
I don't want to say that Skubal will go for a below-average return, but as we've seen in the past, a lot of these starters who are set to hit the free-agent market at the end of the season and command big money don't go for nearly as much as anybody thinks.
There seems to be a sense that he'll go for a package we've never seen before, but while anything is possible, history suggests that won't be the case.
