Gerrit Cole sure appeared to hit an opposing batter intentionally on Monday night during a minor league rehab assignment.
There's no way to know definitively, but it's quite a potentially questionable move by the New York Yankees ace.
The pushback would be this: What could Cole possibly gain from hitting a batter while pitching for the High-A Hudson Valley Renegades?
But then you watch the clip:
This is what being hit intentionally looks like. I have no context to what happened, I don’t need it.
Honestly there’s no reason a big leaguer (rehab) needs to hit a minor leaguer. pic.twitter.com/1x1MBEVnZk

It's the first pitch of the at bat. Cole doesn't look away or seem bothered. He just wants a new baseball.
The guy he hit, Caleb Bonemer, already had two hits, including a first-inning home run.
It's hard to know if something specific about Bonemer's actions may have annoyed Cole, or if he simply decided he'd move on from this batter to another one.
It wasn't a good night for Cole, who went 4.1 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits, including two home runs.
It seems he'll need a bit more time down on the farm to rehab as he closes in on his return from Tommy John surgery.
He might be better served by avoiding throwing at opposing hitters from here on out, though.
