Yankees facing a Eugenio Suarez trade deadline nightmare that would be the star third baseman's fault

The New York Yankees may have a problem.

The problem is Eugenio Suarez's bat.

New York needs an upgrade at third base, and Suarez is the top option available on the trade market heading to the deadline.

Suarez is also red hot for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He slugged two home runs on Saturday and another two on Sunday, giving him 35 on the season. He leads the National League and is only behind Seattle's Cal Raleigh and New York's Aaron Judge on the overall MLB home run leaderboard.

His hot-hitting has the Diamondbacks back up to a .500 record, though. And there's a chance, maybe, that Arizona will choose not to sell if this keeps up.

Suarez was asked about that reality after Sunday's game and gave a simple answer: "We want to make it a hard decision for (the front office)… I think we have a chance.’’

The right-handed Suarez has an expiring contract, which makes this tough.

Given Suarez's current performance and the need of multiple contenders at third base, he might command a solid return in a trade even though he's only a rental.

The Diamondbacks can't really afford to hold Suarez and Josh Naylor and then miss the playoffs. They'd get nothing for two talented players, assuming they walk in free agency.

They also don't want to give up, though, and Suarez clearly doesn't want that.

In reality, Suarez's performance has just pushed the decision point back as far as possible. The Diamondbacks have a week-and-a-half to make a call here.

If Suarez keeps this up, and Arizona keeps winning, it may end up as bad news for the Yankees.
