Yankees-Diamondbacks trade idea would bring new pitcher to Bronx

The New York Yankees went into the All-Star Break in second place in the American League East. They could be aggressive at the trade deadline in hopes of reclaiming the lead.

The Yankees need a third baseman, but perhaps that is overshadowing their need in the starting rotation. They are reportedly getting Luis Gil back next month, and their top three starters figure to be Max Fried, Carlos Rodón and Gil. However, is that enough to get them through October?

After those three, the Yankees have Marcus Stroman, Will Warren and Cam Schlittler as options. Ryan Yarbrough was great in the rotation, but he is on the injured list. Clarke Schmidt and Gerrit Cole are both out for the season, and the Yankees could use some depth. Bleacher Report's Tyler Ward tabbed the Yankees as a fit for Zac Gallen of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

"On the rotation front, (the Yankees) can certainly add some weapons there," said Ward. "We know Brian Cashman is going to be diligent in trying to add in all of those areas. Gallen, who grew up a New Jersey native who is not foreign to playing on the East Coast, may very well find himself there again by this year's deadline."

Gallen has been a Cy Young Award candidate and an All-Star in the past. From 2020 to 2024, he had a 3.34 ERA in 128 starts and was a Cy Young Award candidate three times. However, this season he has not played well and will be a free agent after the season. According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Diamondbacks are making him available.

He has a 5.40 ERA this season, but could be a solid No.4 or No. 5 starter for the Yankees when Yarbrough returns. He would also be insurance if Fried, Gil or Rodón suffer an injury.
