Yankees' Devin Williams makes announcement amid 9.24 ERA

It's gone as poorly as one could've imagined for Devin Williams in his first 12.2 innings in a New York Yankees jersey.

After the Yankees made a blockbuster deal to acquire him during the offseason, the hope was for Williams to come in and continue to be one of the top relievers in Major League Baseball.

Instead, arguably the best closer in Major League Baseball has already been demoted from his closer role amid a 9.24 ERA and multiple blown saves.

Pitching against the San Diego Padres earlier in the week, Williams allowed three earned runs, two walks, and three hits, losing the Yankees another game.

However, the Yankees needed him again on Wednesday, and he came in and did exactly what he was expected to do when he arrived in New York. Williams allowed no hits, walked one, and struck out three in his one inning of work.

Speaking to reporters after the game, he made a promising announcement, saying that he can't make any excuses and has to go out there and take ownership of what he's done in the early stages of the year.

“I mean, I’m not going to say I’ll never have a bad outing again,” Williams said Wednesday, per the New York Post. “I just feel like myself. Taking ownership of the situation and since then, I’ve pitched with more confidence, continued to do that today.”

If there's one thing New York fans don't like, it's players who make excuses.

Williams, 30 years old, seems to understand that this is his fault. He has to figure things out, and if the past is any indication, he'll do just that.
