Yankees dealing with unclear Jasson Dominguez problem amid crowded outfield

The New York Yankees didn't have the most active offseason by any means, but they still are heading into 2026 with a solid roster in both the lineup and the pitching staff.

Two of their biggest roster moves were Trent Grisham accepting his $22.025 million qualifying offer and Cody Bellinger re-signing on a long-term deal.

But those two moves have left Jasson Dominguez with an uncertain future. As MLB.com's Bryan Hoch notes, the Yankees' plan with Dominguez is unclear amid the crowded outfield in New York.

"Dominguez's playing time dropped significantly in the second half last season, and with Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham returning to join Aaron Judge in the outfield, it's unclear how the Yankees intend to find at-bats for Dominguez," Hoch writes.

This unclear situation for Dominguez is a problem, though it's not necessarily a bad one to have. Their outfield is one of the best in all of MLB, leaving them with few options with Dominguez.

Judge, Bellinger, and Grisham are everyday starters, while their designated hitter spot is also occupied. Keeping Dominguez on the MLB roster doesn't really make much sense.

While the Yankees aren't going to give up on Dominguez, they might be forced to make a difficult decision this year.

Sending their top outfield prospect back to the minor leagues to begin the season, so he can get at-bats and develop a bit, might be the best option for the Yankees this season.

They can always call him up if there's an injury, or if he's playing great while one of the MLB starters is struggling. But Dominguez might not be on the Yankees Opening Day roster as Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone figure out how best to use him.
