Yankees 'dabbled' in Tarik Skubal trade talks despite one major handicap

The New York Yankees made two major moves at the 2026 MLB trade deadline, acquiring Luis Garcia Jr. from the Washington Nationals and Heliot Ramos from the San Francisco Giants.

But they also explored another potential deal, and this one would've been a major blockbuster. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Yankees "dabbled" in trade talks for Detroit Tigers' Cy Young winning-ace Tarik Skubal.

However, amid their pursuit of Skubal, Passan revealed they have one major handicap that all but guaranteed they'd have little to no chance of landing him. That one issue is that the Yankees had no intention of trading George Lombard Jr. in a Skubal deal.

"The Yankees dabbled in the conversations, though their unwillingness to cede shortstop George Lombard Jr. handicapped them," Passan reports.

All angles of this report from Passan should not come as any surprise to Yankees' fans. For starters, is it really surprising for the Yankees to be involved in the pursuit of a top player?

They're always one of the teams mentioned when an elite player, free agent, or trade target becomes available. That's even the case here with Skubal, despite their already strong rotation.

Also, is it really a surprise that the Yankees were strong in their stance that Lombard wouldn't be available? That's the right mindset for Brian Cashman and company to have, as there's no player available that Lombard would be worth trading for.

But, with the Tigers looking for a top-tier prospect, and the Yankees likely not having the kind of high-end prospect behind Lombard that would really move the needle, their pursuit of Skubal was going to prove to be difficult.

Maybe if they packaged Will Warren, Carlos Lagrange, and some other prospect, they'd have a chance, but the overall package the Yankees would need to give up to move the needle for Detroit was probably way too expensive.

They just simply didn't line up well for a trade. It's a shame, but it happens all the time. Being unwilling to trade Lombard handicapped the Yankees in their pursuit of Skubal, but it wasn't a bad thing. Trading Lombard would've been a mistake, even for Skubal.

Lombard has already proven as such in his brief MLB career, playing incredible defense and hitting a home run. It's looking like the Yankees made the right call holding onto Lombard instead of using him to land Skubal.
