Despite some early-season turbulence with the starting pitching, the New York Yankees are off to an encouraging start in 2025. This group sits at 27-19 and is 5 games up on the 2nd-place Boston Red Sox in the American League East.

Aaron Judge is already the frontrunner to collect his 3rd MVP trophy, and newest ace Max Fried has looked like the best pitcher in Major League Baseball so far. That being said, for most of Sunday night, the Yankees were locked in a contested game with the New York Mets, who also have World Series-sized aspirations.

After splitting the first 2 games, the Subway Series was tied at 2-2 going into the bottom of the 8th inning. The Bronx Bombers subsequently put together a 6-run inning, sparked by a massive error by Mets first baseman Pete Alonso.

Cody Bellinger capped off the night with a grand slam to put the Yankees up 8-2 and give them the series win. However, the former National League MVP singled out 1 key at-bat that led to Alonso’s error as the reason the Yankees won this game. Bellinger shouted out second baseman Jorbit Vivas for his 11-pitch at-bat with runners on 2nd and 3rd, putting his team ahead 3-2.

"He (Vivas) 100 percent won us the game with that at-bat,'' Bellinger asserted.

Vivas is a young prospect from Venezuela who is just learning to play on the big league level. The 24-year-old’s maturity in the batter’s box against Mets reliever Ryne Stanek and his 100 mph four-seamer was a terrific sight to see. Going forward, there will be plenty more opportunities for the young infielder should he continue to put together quality at-bats like the one he had on Sunday.
