BALTIMORE — On a night when the Yankees clubbed six home runs and piled up 15 runs, Carlos Rodón threatened to steal the show.
The left-hander retired the first 15 batters he faced, breezing into the sixth inning with a perfect game bid before it was erased on a walk and a double, but he continued a strong string of starts in the Yankees’ 15-3 win over the Orioles on Tuesday at Camden Yards.
“I knew it was there,” Rodón said of his bid at history. “Big lead, just try to attack the zone. It’s kind of in the back of your head, but you just keep going.”
The end result was still an impressive one as Rodón gave up just two hits over six-plus innings while striking out seven and walking one.
Over his past three starts, Rodón has allowed just three runs (two earned) over 19 innings with 24 strikeouts.
The one walk was his lowest of the season as he lowered his ERA to 3.43.

The Yankees made Rodón wait a while between his last pitch in the bullpen and his first pitch of the game, but he did not mind that much because they were busy giving him a 5-0 lead.
While he threw weighted balls down in the tunnel to stay loose during some of the longer innings, Rodón said he was just focused on filling up the strike zone and staying aggressive.
“It’s easy when the boys put up five runs in the first,” Rodón said. “Just go out there and Austin [Wells] and I go attack the zone and just get outs because we have such a nice lead that we can cruise and attack hitters and just get outs.”
Rodón needed only 62 pitches to get through five perfect innings before he walked Emmanuel Rivera to lead off the sixth. Jorge Mateo then doubled off him and a groundout later, the shutout was gone too.
Gunnar Henderson took Rodón deep to lead off the seventh and end his night on a sour note, but it was overwhelmingly positive once again for the Yankees’ $162 million lefty.
