Jasson Domínguez has been a part of New York Yankees lore since he was 16 years old, and it's nearly his time to make an impact on a pennant run.
That is, of course, unless the Yankees make the unpopular decision to trade him.
The Yankees' top prospect according to any publication's rankings, Domínguez is currently the heavy favorite to win the starting left field job in the Bronx this season. After the 21-year-old had his season cut short in 2024 by Tommy John recovery and an oblique injury, he's looking to prove he's ready to become a superstar.
Even after the setbacks he faced last year, there are very few players the Yankees would likely consider moving Domínguez to obtain. Might the Cleveland Guardians have one of them?
In a recent tweet, former Yankees outfielder and current Major League Baseball analyst Cameron Maybin proposed that New York could package Domínguez in a deal to get Guardians left fielder Steven Kwan, who has won three Gold Gloves in his three-year career.
"Why not see if there's a package for Jasson Dominguez(?)" Maybin wrote.
"For the Yankees (Kwan's) ability to play gold glove defense and be a table setter would be the catalyst they need in front of Judge. Especially considering the (Guardians) haven't tried to resign him yet! And yes I would trade Dominguez for Kwan."
Kwan, 27, averages 5.0 bWAR per 162 games, thanks to his extreme contact bat and sensational defense. He made the American League All-Star team last season and slashed .292/..368/.425, good for a 126 OPS+.
The Guardians could be even more reluctant to part with Kwan than the Yankees are with Domínguez, so Maybin's musings don't exactly amount to a confirmation of interest. But a bold move like this one would be a fascinating way for New York to assert its dominance in the AL.
