New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells is not having a fun time at the plate.
Wells grounded out into a double play to end a scoring threat in the 10th inning in yesterday's loss to the New York Mets.
He has just three hits in his last 31 at-bats while carrying a .556 OPS in 36 games thus far this season.
“Not many words to describe how bad I’ve been,” Wells told reporters, including Greg Joyce of the New York Post, on Sunday. “I got to do better to pick the team up.”
There's no easy fix on offense at catcher for the Yankees. Backup J.C. Escarra, although in a smaller sample size of 46 at-bats, owns a .507 OPS.
Perhaps the AL East club will target offensive-minded backstops at the trade deadline. For now, Yankees manager Aaron Boone is not prepared to make major changes.

“We’ll see,” Boone told Joyce. “As good as [Wells] is behind the plate, I have a lot of faith and trust in J.C. Escarra behind the plate too, what he brings to the table. Obviously, we've got to get [Wells] going, want to get him going, because when he’s right, he’s a presence, especially down at the bottom of the order. We've got to get him there.”
Wells must improve with the bat if the Yankees are to meet their expectations and goals. He is walking more than ever, but with just three home runs, the power is missing.
