Yankees' Anthony Volpe leads league in a stat you don't want to lead MLB in

22 hours ago 2

Anthony Volpe is a tough player for the New York Yankees' fanbase to make their minds up on.

Because sometimes, right when the Yanks need it, Volpe delivers. That's what happened as part of their multi-rally win over the Rays on Wednesday night. A Volpe game-tying homer came at the perfect time.

But aside from Volpe's occasional strikeout woes at the plate, there's something that frustrates the Yankees' faithful even more.

It's when Volpe puts on a glove and trots out to shortstop, where things have felt like an adventure this season.

Before Volpe's heroics against the Rays, he committed his 16th error of the season. That's the most in Major League Baseball.

There are a couple ways of looking at this, not all bad.

Shortstops will naturally make more errors than some other positions, because of the frequency and the difficulty of the chances they receive.

On the flip side, though, Volpe's errors aren't all on difficult plays.

Some of his most frustrating moments have come when Volpe boots a simple groundball that he should take care of with his eyes closed.

His error on Wednesday was far from his worst. Ben Rice could've picked the ball. But it still could've been better.

Errors are a long-existing baseball statistic. They aren't considered the be-all, end-all of defense at this point.

They still tell a story, though. Volpe has messed up more than anyone else in the league on baseballs that make it to his glove. And that's not ideal.

The Yankees don't have an alternative, barring a last-minute trade, and so it'll be up to Volpe to find a way to be as clean as he can in the field the rest of the way.
