The captain just passed The Captain.
Aaron Judge just surpassed one impressive Derek Jeter mark in Yankees history.
The official pass came on Sunday night, when Judge launched a pair of home runs against the Boston Red Sox, raising his season average to .396 in the process.
The stat that’s relevant here is Wins Above Replacement.
Judge is now up to 5.2 WAR on the season. It’s his seventh season of at least 5.0 WAR.
Jeter only had six seasons of 5.0 or more WAR in his MLB career.

Judge now ranks fifth in Yankees history in amount of seasons to get to 5.0 WAR, according to NYY Stats.
The four names ahead of Judge on the list are four of the best players in baseball history: Babe Ruth (14 such seasons), Lou Gehrig (12), Mickey Mantle (11) and Joe DiMaggio (9).
Because of how WAR is calculated, Judge could technically fall below 5.0 if he struggled the rest of the way. That seems highly unlikely, though.
Judge’s season has already been prolific. Only 10 hitters across the entire 2024 MLB season reached the 5.0 WAR mark, and Judge has done it this year in fewer than 70 games.
Don’t take Judge for granted, because this isn’t normal.
Any time you can surpass Jeter in a Yankees ranking is an impressive feat, and that’s the latest of many remarkable things Judge has done this season.
