Yankees' Aaron Boone makes lineup decision on struggling infielder

The New York Yankees have one of the best offenses in the entire league.

The Yankees lead the American League East division with a 16-11 record, carried by an offense that ranks in the top five in nearly every statistical category. Leading the way is superstar Aaron Judge with an absurd .412 batting average and seven home runs.

New York's offense is overwhelming, yet not everyone is performing great. Third-year shortstop Anthony Volpe has been struggling early in the season. Despite his early-season struggles, Yankees manager Aaron Boone has no intention of taking Volpe out of the everyday lineup, according to The New York Post's Mark Sanchez.

“You’re a good series away from being back in that [.800 OPS] neighborhood,” Boone told reporters. “I thought he was really good, and I noticed [his swing during batting practice] being a little bit more where it needs to be. But he’s walking more, hitting the ball hard. Got to get a little more contact, but no reason to think that can’t start to happen again.”

Volpe is currently slashing .216/.319/.762 and is not far off from where Boone was talking about. The 23-year-old has played 159 or more games in his first two seasons and has a Gold Glove Award at shortstop. Volpe has already mashed nearly half his 2024 total of 12 home runs he had last season, with five in only 27 games played despite a sluggish start offensively.

Having a slow start to the season is nothing new to Volpe. He bounced back last season and finished the season with a .243 average. Boone believes in Volpe and has no intention to bench him even with the Yankees' recent struggles.
