‘WWHL’: Martha Stewart Left An Angry Voicemail For Stephanie Ruhl After Her Interview Shading Gwyneth Paltrow Went Viral

Television host Stephanie Ruhle is reflecting on her 2013 interview with Martha Stewart in which the cookbook author infamously shaded Gwyneth Paltrow.

On Thursday night’s (Nov. 14) episode of Watch What Happens Live, Ruhle revealed that Stewart left her an “angry” voicemail after the interview clip went viral.

“She was angry [about] how I edited it, how I pushed that out,” Ruhle told host Andy Cohen. “Martha forgets — Martha says some pretty tough things but it’s what makes her extraordinary.”

Still, Ruhle tried to make it up to Stewart.

“I panicked,” she recalled. “I went to her first cookbook, I made her original cookies, I put them in a basket, I brought them to her office, and in true Martha style, I never heard from her again. But I love [her] documentary.”

According to Ruhle, she was working at Bloomberg Television when the interview took place.

“I turned and I said, ‘So, Martha, you’ve sort of created this influencer economy. What’s your take on Gwyneth Paltrow and Goop?’” Ruhle explained. “And Martha, in full Martha style, turns around and says, ‘Well, I’ve never seen her garden or had her home-cooked meal and I’m not sure she’s designed her tablescape.’ And it went everywhere.”

While Stewart wasn’t happy with the attention the interview got, that didn’t stop her from shading Paltrow again the following year.

“She just needs to be quiet. She’s a movie star. If she were confident in her acting, she wouldn’t be trying to be Martha Stewart,” she said in a 2014 interview with Net-a-Porter’s Porter magazine, per Page Six.

Paltrow later responded sarcastically to the insult in her chat with Time magazine.

“No one has ever said anything bad about me before, so I’m shocked and devastated. I’ll try to recover,” she joked at the time. “If I’m really honest, I’m so psyched that she sees us as competition. I really am.”

Watch What Happens Live airs Sunday through Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on Bravo. New episodes are available to stream the next day on Peacock.
