The group stage of the WTA Finals 2025 will conclude on Thursday, November 6. Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka, and Jessica Pegula are in contention for the two semifinal spots from Group Steffi Graf, while Jasmine Paolini has been eliminated.

The qualification scenarios for the three players are far from straightforward, and even after winning two matches, one player could still miss out on a semifinal berth. Sabalenka will take on Gauff, while Pegula will face Paolini.

Sabalenka's win over Gauff would put her in the semifinals regardless of the scoreline, that too as the group winner. Even if she loses to the American, a Paolini win would still clear the way for her to make the last four. Pegula winning her match in three sets would also assure her of a semifinal spot. One of the two ways she gets eliminated is if Gauff and Pegula both win in straight sets.

For Gauff, a straight sets win will help her advance out of the group stage as the group winner. As long as she wins without losing a set, she remains unaffected by the outcome of the other match. A three-set win also works for her, as long as Paolini wins with any score or Pegula wins in three sets as well.

Pegula has no chance of topping the group except for one scenario. She will also hope that Sabalenka beats Gauff, as that is the most viable path for her to the semifinals. She can still make the semifinals with a loss, provided Sabalenka wins in straight sets and she goes down to Paolini in three sets.

The most convoluted path for the three contenders would be Gauff winning in three sets combined with Pegula winning in straight sets. Then it would come down to the percentage of games won by each player, and the two candidates with the best showing advance further.

This is the other scenario which could lead to Sabalenka's exit, and the only possible chance Pegula has to emerge as the group winner. The top two from this group will then take on the two semifinalists from Group Serena Williams.

Elena Rybakina has reached the semifinals of the WTA Finals 2025 in decisive fashion, winning all three of her group stage matches. She has advanced beyond the group stage for the first time. As the group winner, she will face the second-placed player from Group Steffi Graf in the semifinals.

Amanda Anisimova has qualified for the WTA Finals semifinals on her debut. She lost her opener to Rybakina in straight sets, and then rallied from a set down to beat Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek. As the second-placed player from her group, she will take on the winner of the other group in the semifinals.

Rybakina and Anisimova could still meet in the final if they both win their semifinal matches. This would be the first instance of two players from the same group contesting the WTA Finals final since 2021, when Garbine Muguruza beat Anett Kontaveit in the group stage and then in the final.
