Worst Manchester United seasons in Premier League history: Ruben Amorim on course to break Erik ten Hag records

20 hours ago 1

Manchester United endured a horror-show of a season in 2023/24 as they finished eighth in the Premier League;

The FA Cup final versus Man City on May 25 earned them a reprieve, at least, as they won 2-1 at Wembley to lift the trophy and secure qualification for the UEFA Europa League. It was also a result that helped manager Erik ten Hag keep his job, albeit for only a few more months.

However, that win over City did not mask what was a wretched season. They went out of Europe before the new year after their worst group-stage performance ever in the UEFA Champions League, their Carabao Cup defence was ended on home soil by Newcastle United, and the FA Cup allowed them to sneak into Europe after they contrived to miss out on qualification via their league position.

Given the squad was ravaged by injuries and there was uncertainty behind the scenes as INEOS took over sporting control at Old Trafford, it was anticipated that things would improve in 2024/25. It certainly wasn't expected that they would get even worse.

Yet that is exactly what has happened, and Ruben Amorim is now battling to avoid setting new unwanted records.

Manchester United Premier League lows

United are in danger of descending to new lows unless Amorim can get his injury-depleted squad performing.

Points

United's worst points return in the Premier League era was 58, which they posted in 2021/22, the season before Erik ten Hag became manager. The previous lowest points total in a season was the 64 points in 2013/14 under David Moyes.

They finished the 2023/24 campaign on 60 points, not quite the lowest but certainly nothing to be proud of, and 2024/25 is now confirmed to be far worse.

With 38 points through 33 matches, they are on pace to finish with just 44 points, far below their worst-ever mark. Even if they win out from here, the maximum point total would be 53, so regardless of their results the rest of the way, this record will be rewritten, and by a significant margin.

Worst Finish

Moyes took United to their lowest finish in the table in the Premier League era in that 2013/14 season, when the reigning champions ended up seventh.

Ten Hag, despite a win on the final day, managed to beat Moyes' record and set a new worst-ever league finish since it became the Premier League as they were rooted to eighth.

United are 14th after 33 games of 2024/25 and 11 points adrift of eighth-placed Bournemouth, meaning they will almost surely set a new low-water mark when the final table is officially solidified at the end of the campaign.

Goals Scored

United's all-time season-low figure of 49 goals scored was at risk of being broken in 2023/24, but they finished strong in that regard with five goals in their last two games to finish on 57 goals scored.

Their average of 1.5 goals per game in 2024/25 means they are on course to set a new lowest-ever figure of just 38 goals through 33 matches. They would need to score nine goals across their last five games of the season to avoid setting a new low here, and that feels unlikely with a run-in that includes games against Bournemouth, Chelsea, and Aston Villa.

Goals Conceded

Ten Hag's team conceded 58 in 2023/24, breaking the previous record set in 2021/22.

This number is one of the few which feels somewhat safe, as they have only leaked 46 so far with five games to go. They would need to ship 12 games over their final five matches to put this mark in jeopardy.

Fewest wins

The Red Devils set a new low for wins in a Premier League season in 2021/22, with 16 victories. Ten Hag managed to win 18 games in 2023/24, with back-to-back victories to close the season.

This mark is now assured to be reset, as they have just 10 victories with five matches to go, meaning the most they can achieve is 15. With a difficult run-in and the focus now entirely on their European campaign, the Red Devils will almost surely finish even lower than that in this category.

Most Losses

United's biggest number of defeats in a single Premier League season was previously 12. Their humiliating loss at Crystal Palace on May 6, 2024 saw them set a new worst tally of 13, and a 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal took them to 14 for the season.

They have blown past this number now, suffering their 15th defeat of the season when they fell to Wolves on April 20.
