An expanded World Cup means 40 more matches in 2026, but the goal for each team is still the same: win the final one.
While that goal is much more realistic for some than others, the start of the World Cup brings hope for all 48 teams in the field as they look to make their home fans proud on the biggest stage in the world.

World Cup matches today
Four matches are set to be played on Monday:
Monday, June 22
First up was the second game for defending champions Argentina and Lionel Messi. They faced their toughest assignment of the group stage against Ralf Rangnick's Austria in Arlington, but two goals by Messi led Argentina to its second win.
After that comes a Group I double header. France took care of Iraq 3-0 in Philadelphia thanks to another Kylian Mbappe double, then Erling Haaland and Norway match up against Senegal at MetLife Stadium.
The last game of the day is the other Group J game between Jordan and Algeria in Santa Clara.
