World Cup knockouts by miles traveled: Colombia, Canada face most difficult distances on road to 2026 final

1 hour ago 3

The biggest World Cup ever meant more traveling than ever.

For the 2026 edition of the international tournament, featuring 48 teams for the first time as the United States, Mexico and Canada all played host, there has been a fairly long list of FIFA-approved stadiums that have hosted a match. As the tournament goes on, the destinations for teams will shrink as the field does, culminating in the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

However, while the group stage was designed to primarily keep teams in one geographic area, the knockout stage is far more unpredictable. Depending on results, some squads could be dealing with far more travel than others if they continue their World Cup run.

Here's a look at the scheduled traveling for the 2026 World Cup knockouts and which teams could spend lots of time on planes, should they keep winning.

World Cup knockouts by miles traveled 2026

The destination for every 2026 World Cup match has been pre-determined, regardless of which teams reach that game. So, depending on the results from each knockout round, different teams could be dealing with more significant traveling circumstances.

Here's a breakdown of the furthest traveling distances for each knockout round, based on figures from USA Today.

Round of 16: Colombia vs. Ghana winner set for lengthy trip

With the Round of 32 matchups now set, teams know their path to the final — and they also know where they'll play next, should they win.

In the Round of 32, the furthest that a winner will have to travel will come from the result of Colombia vs. Ghana, a game being held in Kansas City. Whichever team wins that game will have to travel 1,572 miles to Vancouver — the location of that winner's Round of 16 match against either Switzerland or Algeria.

Other long trips for the Round of 32 winners include the victor of Brazil vs. Japan traveling 1,423 miles to New York, where that team will face the winner of Ivory Coast vs. Norway, traveling 1,385 miles from Dallas.

Quarterfinals: Canada, Morocco or Netherlands to make longest trip of knockouts

The longest team flight in the entire knockout round of the 2026 World Cup will be for the winner of Game No. 90 in the Round of 16. That victor will hop on a plane going from Houston to Boston, where they will play in the quarterfinals.

The three teams who could be making that 1,592-mile trip include Canada, Morocco and Netherlands, depending on results.

Another far trip for the quarterfinals will be traveling from Vancouver to Kansas City — either Switzerland, Algeria, Colombia or Ghana will have to fly 1,572 miles.

Semifinals: Boston-to-Dallas flight the longest for final four teams

Once the tournament reaches the semifinals, the four winners from the quarterfinals will convene in two locations: Dallas and Atlanta.

While one victor will have to travel just 594 miles from Miami to Atlanta, another will be traveling from Boston to Dallas, which is 1,549 miles. Additionally, the Los Angeles winner will travel 1,224 miles to Dallas.

Among the favorites on the side of the bracket playing in Dallas for the semifinals include Germany, Spain and the Netherlands.

Final: Dallas semifinal winner to travel over 1,300 miles to MetLife Stadium

Finally, wrapping up the 2026 World Cup, one team will be flying from Dallas, and the other from Atlanta, to meet at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey.

The trip from Dallas to New Jersey is 1,385 miles, a bit of a traveling challenge for one of the final squads.
