World awaits for white smoke as conclave elects a new pope

The conclave to select the next pope has begun after 133 Catholic cardinals from more than 70 countries across the world filed into the Sistine Chapel on May 7. The cardinals famously communicate to the outside world using only smoke signals – black smoke meaning no cardinal received two-thirds support, white meaning a new pope has been chosen.

It is unclear how long this conclave will last, but the previous ten averaged three days, with the 2013 selection of Pope Francis lasting two days.
