Sophie Cunningham set off a string of events that resulted in an on-court brawl in Indianapolis Tuesday night after she pulled the Connecticut Sun's Jacy Sheldon to the ground. In the end, Cunningham, Sheldon, and the Sun's Lindsay Allen were all ejected from the game in its final minute — and today the WNBA announced its punishment for everyone involved.
Marina Mabrey's technical from last night's Fever-Sun game has been upgraded to a flagrant 2, the league told ESPN. A flagrant 2 comes from a standard fine.
Additionally, Sophie Cunningham was fined separately for her hard foul with 46 secs to play
No players will be suspended
The exchange between Cunningham and Sheldon followed a third-quarter blow-up that also threatened to derail the game. Sheldon poked Caitlin Clark in the eye and then shoved her, which prompted Clark to shove back, and then Sheldon's teammate Marina Mabrey pushed Clark to the ground. The involved players were hit with technical fouls and flagrant fouls.
The WNBA announced that though Mabrey was initially hit with a tech, that has been upgraded to a flagrant 2 foul, which means she will receive a fine. And as for Cunningham? According to ESPN's Alexa Philippou, she'll also be fined — though it seems unlikely she's too bothered by that.
So far none of the players involved will be suspended, though there have certainly been calls for both Mabrey and Cunningham to be forced to sit out.
