The Washington Wizards added a major scoring threat to their backcourt, selecting Texas guard Tre Johnson with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday night.
Johnson, 19, arrives in Washington after a standout freshman season with the Longhorns. He averaged 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game and shot an impressive 42.7 percent from the field and 39.7 percent from three-point range. He led the SEC in scoring and earned SEC Freshman of the Year honors and a spot on the All-SEC Second Team.
The 6-foot-6 guard started 33 of 35 games for Texas, quickly establishing himself as one of college basketball's prolific shooters. Johnson’s blend of size, shooting touch, and scoring versatility made him a coveted prospect, with draft analysts rating him among the most natural scorers in the 2025 class. His ability to score from all three levels and create his shot drew comparisons to established NBA guards, and scouts believe his work ethic and offensive polish will translate well to the professional game.

A native of Dallas, Johnson starred at Lake Highlands High School before finishing his prep career at Link Academy in Missouri. He was a consensus five-star recruit and ranked among the top guards in the 2024 class.
Wizards general manager Will Dawkins cited Johnson’s upside and immediate impact potential as key factors in the selection, especially with the franchise seeking a long-term backcourt cornerstone since Bradley Beal's departure. Johnson is expected to join a revamped Wizards roster and could benefit from the mentorship of veteran guard CJ McCollum, acquired in a recent trade.
“Just super proud, not only for him, but for his whole family,” said Joe Duffield, Johnson’s former high school coach, who attended the draft in Brooklyn. “His ability to shoot the ball is special. Throughout high school, he was what we call a 50, 40, 90 guy: 50% from the field, 40% from three, and 90% from the free throw line.”
