After an eye-catching debut trailer at The Game Awards 2025, Larian Studios has revealed that they are working on a new Divinity game. While not much has been known thus far about technical details, the team has divulged new information in a recent interview. For starters, yes, Divinity will be turn-based yet again.

While this is great news for fans of Baldur's Gate 3 and the two Original Sin titles, it will be disappointing news for fans of the original PC titles or for those hoping for the studio to veer in a new direction. Here are the details.

Divinity's turn-based combat builds upon the foundations of past Larian Studios games

Studio head Swen Vincke touched upon this aspect when talking about how the upcoming ambitious RPG will use its own unique rule-set for mechanics and calculations instead of relying on the framework they created for Baldur's Gate 3, which was based on DnD 5E (Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition).

This makes sense since Divinity is not part of the DnD universe, but Vin also says that they do not plan to make something they have done before. As such, Divinity will not be a copy of Divinity: Original Sin 2. That said, the team will build the game atop the work they did for Baldur's Gate 3 and will be even more ambitious.

To quote Vincke:

"It's new tech, built obviously on the existing tech that we had before. But there's a lot of things that we can do now, that we couldn't do before."

He adds further:

"In gameplay, that is going to be the thing that excites people the most, besides the visual fideluty which obviously has gone up"

This is impressive, as we lauded their latest DnD effort to be a genre-defining step forward in our Baldur's Gate 3 review for featuring choices that truly shape the adventure forward in a genuinely impactful manner. This is on top of boasting stunning third-person visuals for an isometric CRPG.

Coming back to the main subject, however, it is curious that this is another turn-based effort in Larian Studios' menu. While many players may not be surprised at this direction, considering recent series installments, the fact that the game is simply titled Divinity kept the doors open for the team to go back to their roots in real-time action.

Thus far, we only have the debut cinematic trailer to go off on, as the game is in production, so it will be a while before the game is out. However, Larian Studios plans to launch the game in Early Access, just like Baldur's Gate 3, so they can tweak the game based on community feedback.
