Will the Jaguars fire Doug Pederson? Head coach reportedly could be let go with loss to Lions

2 hours ago 1

The Jaguars were supposed to compete for a playoff spot this year, but Jacksonville sits at 2-8 this year and tied for the worst record in the NFL. With such a disappointing season unfolding, it only feels like a matter of time before they move on from head coach Doug Pederson.

On Sunday, the Jaguars play the 8-1 Lions, and barring the biggest upset in the NFL thus far this season, Jacksonville is headed towards becoming the first team with nine losses this year. That would mark the first time in the Pederson era that the Jaguars reached nine losses, a sign of how far the team has fallen this year.

Here is where the Jaguars stand heading into their Week 11 game at Detroit.

Will the Jaguars fire Doug Pederson?

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that the Jaguars could fire Pederson if Jacksonville loses to the Lions on Sunday. The Jaguars will enter their bye next week, giving the team a two week buffer to potentially prepare for life under a new head coach.

Rapoport names quarterbacks coach Mike McCoy as a possible interim head coach if the team does choose to let Pederson go. McCoy spent four seasons as the Chargers head coach from 2013-16, compiling a 27-37 record in San Diego.

Additionally, Rapoport reports that it would "not be a surprise" if the Jaguars fire general manager Trent Baalke after the season. Baalke and Pederson have spent the past three seasons together trying to build up the Jaguars.

Pederson's Jaguars tenure started off on a strong note, leading the team to a six-win turnaround, an AFC South title and a playoff victory. However, it started to go south last year, when the Jaguars went 1-5 in their last six games last year to miss the playoffs.

Since the Jaguars are headed in the wrong direction, Jacksonville seems poised to make a change and start fresh next year.
