Will Man United sign Aurelien Tchouameni? Why Real Madrid midfielder now looks like attainable transfer target

Another year, another transfer window where Manchester United attempt to sign midfielders.

Except this time, they're actually getting them.

Michael Carrick made it clear that strengthening the heart of the team was a priority, and they have already brought in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. Their next target would appear to be Aurelien Tchouameni of Real Madrid.

Rumours of interest in Tchouameni surfaced before the 2026 World Cup, but nothing really came of it. However, recent reports indicate United's interest never really went away and, in fact, they may now be in a stronger position to strike what would likely be one of the biggest deals of the window — perhaps one that even rivals the fee Chelsea paid for Morgan Rogers.

Will Man United sign Aurelien Tchouameni?

The Sun's Samuel Luckhurst reported on July 23 that Madrid may now consider selling Tchouameni to Man United, despite previous indications that they would resist all but the most outlandish bids.

United are known to want another midfielder, ideally one that is a specialist defensive player, despite signing Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Tielemans from Aston Villa. The Red Devils' priority is a No. 6 in the approximate age range of 22-26, and ideally one with plenty of top-level experience already. Tchouameni, a La Liga, Champions League and Club World Cup winner who has played at two World Cups for France, fits the bill.

There is a long way to go before this can be considered very likely to happen, but the chances of a deal being struck would seem to be higher than they were a month ago.

Why Real Madrid might sell Aurelien Tchouameni

It was previously reported that Madrid were eager to keep Tchouameni, and talk even emerged that he had agreed to a contract extension. Now, however, The Sun says the Spanish club would be prepared to listen to offers.

Madrid have already brought in Bernardo Silva on a free transfer and have Federico Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga on the books. It is also believed they are making every effort to sign Manchester City midfielder Rodri, who has a year left on his contract but appears keen to return to Spain.

Arda Guler and Jude Bellingham are also capable of playing as part of a midfield pivot if required, so selling Tchouameni to balance the books and reduce squad bloating would make sense, even if new coach Jose Mourinho would be happy if he stayed. Madrid could also make further additions in this window if they can command a big enough transfer fee for the France international.

How much will Aurelien Tchouameni cost?

Few concrete figures have been suggested when it comes to United and Tchouameni, partly because no formal transfer bid has yet been submitted.

There was a report from Miguel Serrano just prior to the World Cup that Madrid would only listen to offers of around £153.4m ($205.7m), but it is unlikely the Red Devils would sanction such an exorbitant spend on a 26-year-old with two years left on his contract.

Madrid paid £72.5m ($89.7m) for Tchouameni to sign him from Monaco in 2022, so they would want at least to recoup that sum in full. An offer in the region of £90m ($120m) guaranteed might get negotiations to advance.

Did Aurelien Tchouameni fight Federico Valverde?

Tchouameni was allegedly involved in a "very serious" altercation with teammate Federico Valverde at Madrid's training ground in early May 2026.

Reports at the time indicated that matters escalated to the point of a fight between the two, during which Valverde slipped and banged his head on a table. The Uruguayan was later treated in hospital.

The club fined both players €500,000, but Valverde issued a statement insisting the incident had been blown out of proportion. Tchouameni, while not denying that some sort of altercation occurred, dismissed the "huge reaction" in the media, adding: "A lot of nonsense was said in the press."

Man United transfers in summer 2026

United have made three signings to date in this transfer window: goalkeeper Karl Darlow, and midfielders Tielemans and Santos.

Darlow was a free transfer after his contract at Leeds United expired. He was brought in to provide additional goalkeeping depth, with Andre Onana having returned to Trabzonspor on loan and Altay Bayindir expected to be sold.

Tielemans and Santos cost a combined £83m ($110.8m) in initial fees. United have not yet sold any players to offset the expense, but they did earn £10.57m ($14.1m) as part of a clause in Mason Greenwood's Marseille contract. Greenwood was sold by the French club to Fenerbahce this window.
