Will Jesse Eisenberg Return for The Social Network Sequel? He Said...

Mark Zuckerberg Reacts to Photoshopped Thirst Trap of Himself

Jesse Eisenberg might be leaving his hoodie at the cleaners.

The Social Network alum has yet to confirm if he’ll return for the sequel to the 2010 film, which is currently in the works from screenwriter and director, Aaron Sorkin.

For now, Succession alum Jeremy Strong is rumored to be circling the project, according to The Hollywood Reporter, although it has not been shared who he could be playing, or if he will be joined by any of the other original stars, including Andrew Garfield, Armie Hammer and Justin Timberlake.

Eisenberg, who starred as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in the film, joked to E! News in November that he wasn’t totally opposed to donning the tech guru’s flip flops once again.

“I'm an actor here,” he said. “We'll do any job that anybody offers us. If there's a car commercial for a Pinto, I'll show up on set. Will I be in that movie? Yeah, I'll be in anything. If you're making a home movie for a kid, I’ll be in the home movie.”

And the Oscar nominee wasn’t worried about ruining a good thing by joining the sequel, adding, “Yeah, I don’t have those feelings.”

“I don't care if I'm sitting in a Pinto and saying, ‘Hey, everybody, buy the Pinto. Or an Edsel,’” Eisenberg continued. “I don't care. I'm just happy to be involved.”

While the original film—which won three Oscars, including the award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Sorkin—focused on the founding of Facebook, the sequel would shift its focus to how Facebook, now Meta, has evolved over the years.

"I blame Facebook for January 6,” Sorkin said on The Town podcast in April 2024. "Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible. Because that is what will increase engagement.”

He added, “That is what will get you to—what they call inside the hallways of Facebook—‘the infinite scroll.'"
