Most of the injury news surrounding the 49ers this summer has been negative, from Ricky Pearsall's season-ending knee surgery to coach Kyle Shanahan's serious car accident.
For TE George Kittle, the latest developments have been entirely positive.
Kittle spoke to reporters Sunday about his recovery from January's torn Achilles and expressed optimism that will have San Francisco fans feeling positive heading into the season.

Will George Kittle play Week 1?
Kittle is still keeping hope alive for a Week 1 return against the Rams, which would come a day shy of eight months since he tore his Achilles in the playoffs.
"I have a chance," Kittle told reporters on Sunday. "We're running around a lot, hitting top speeds. Hopefully we're back in pads practicing sooner than later. Just trying to check the boxes and not be a dumb---."

The timing of the game doesn't help Kittle. Not only do the 49ers play three days before most teams kick off their season, but the team is making the trip to Australia eight days before the game, moving up the timeline on a decision.
Kittle told reporters decision on his status would likely be made before the 49ers fly to Australia. If Kittle is ruled out, he won't make the trip with the team.

When will George Kittle return?
If Kittle isn't ready for Week 1, his comments at least indicate he should be able to return in the early weeks of the season.
The 49ers won't play again until Sept. 20 against the Dolphins, giving him some more time to prepare for a potential return in San Francisco's first stateside game of the season.
The 'Niners face two teams projected to finish near the bottom of the NFL between the Dolphins and Cardinals after the Australia game. While the organization won't take any game for granted, a return for a high-stakes game against the Broncos in Week 4 could make sense if Kittle wants to be cautious in September.
What happened to George Kittle?
Kittle suffered an Achilles tear in the 49ers' wild-card round win over the Eagles in January. He was carted back to the locker room and quickly diagnosed with the season-ending injury.
— Zero Gravity (@zgsportsmedia) January 11, 2026Achilles tears typically come with a quicker recovery timeline than ACL tears, but getting back to form can be challenging depending on a player's age. Kittle turns 33 in October, so playing like his old self might be more of an uphill battle than simply getting back on the field.
For the 49ers, just having one of their veteran leaders back on the field would be a major boost after a summer of injury concerns.
